I Messed Up
It started with a realization about my now 14-year-old Maltese, Lulu.
Lulu is energetic, happy, and fiercely loved. But a few years ago, I noticed she was constantly biting and licking her paws. If you’ve ever dealt with dry, cracked skin or chapped lips, you know exactly how uncomfortable, itchy, and distracting it can be. I realized with a wave of guilt that while I never neglected my own daily skincare routine, I had been ignoring Lulu’s paws for years.
Then I did some math. During a typical, breezy 30-minute neighborhood walk, a dog takes over 9,000 steps.
Think about that. Nine thousand steps on abrasive asphalt, blistering summer pavement, or harsh winter sidewalks. I wouldn’t dream of stepping outside without applying my daily moisturizer, UV protection, or lip balm—yet I was letting my best friend take 9,000 steps completely unprotected.
That is why I created Good Kuma.
The Anatomy of a Paw
"It’s not leather. It’s skin."
Vet biology shows us that a dog’s paw pad is structured almost identically to the skin on our own bodies—made of an epidermis, a sensitive dermis, and a protective barrier. But while we wear cushioned shoes and apply daily lotions, our dogs take 9,000 unprotected steps on harsh surfaces every single day. When their skin barrier dries out, it becomes itchy, cracked, and painful. They don't need industrial wax; they need daily, restorative skincare.
Epidermis: Outer Layer
Literally just modified skin. The outermost layer (stratum corneum) dries out, cracks, and loses moisture just like human feet.
Dermis: Middle Layer
Packed with sensitive nerve endings and blood vessels. When the outer layer cracks, these nerves are exposed to burning heat & salt.
Fatty Cushioning
Absorbs shock, but has ZERO natural built-in moisture defense against abrasive concrete or asphalt.
